Challenge

Break down cultural barriers by engaging students through art and sports.

Strategy

In 2009 we created a special project for the Affiliation of Multicultural Societies & Service Agencies of BC. Share Your Sport was funded through the City of Vancouver’s Host a City Happening program and directly engaged elementary students through an online art contest.

The website was a key strategy in outreach to potential participants and was created using open source tools.

The website included information for educators including a Teacher’s Guide with ideas about ways to link the contest with a variety of curriculum topics. It also functioned as a repository for submissions and each class was provided with a unique page to post their stories and artwork.

With a turnout of more than 2,000 people, the Share Your Sport project was launched in February at the 2009 Diversity Health Fair at the Croatian Cultural Centre. A booth was set up in the interactive hall and many individual entries were submitted online at the booth. Children who visited the booth had a great time sharing their favorite sport and learning about sports at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Results

Over the short period of the contest the website recorded 1,300 unique visitors and over 500 students participated through their class projects. At the end of the contest winning class project was selected and a local athlete presented the award.
